This time of the year, there is a wide array of doTERRA oils that I make sure I have in my arsenal. Fall is my favorite season, but it’s also when we start thinking about colds, stomach bugs, and of course the dreaded flu. So my beloved autumn is also when I go into germ high alert, especially now that we are parents. Mom doesn’t get a day off just because a case of the sniffles sets in. Frankincense, Melaleuca, Lemon, and Oregano, are my go-tos when Tim or I come down with something. However, On Guard is my first line of defense in an attempt to boost our immune systems and hopefully keep the germs at bay before they have time to do much damage.

What exactly is On Guard?:

On Guard is a blend created by the masterminds at doTERRA. A blend is simply a combination of essential oils picked strategically to work towards a common goal. In On Guard’s case, this is to be an immune-boosting cleansing powerhouse of awesomeness.

There are multiple benefits of this blend, which you can read more about here. My biggest reason for using it is the the immune support and it’s ability to support our body’s natural antioxidant defenses. In layman’s terms: it helps to fight germs and improves our chances of functioning through the cold and flu months.

The blend consists of Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Leaf, and Rosemary Leaf/Flower essential oils. The wonderful spicy scent makes it a perfect diffuser option for this time of year.

Uses of On Guard:

  • Add two to three drops in a veggie capsule for an immune boost.
  • Add to water for an effective all-purpose surface cleaner.
  • Soak sliced apples in water and a few drops for a healthy, immune-boosting snack.
  • Combine a few drops of doTERRA On Guard with Fractionated Coconut Oil for a natural hand cleanser.

How We Use On Guard:

PLEASE NOTE: Not all essential oils are safe for consumption. doTERRA created a testing system for their brand that they’ve coined “CPTG” (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade). You can read more about this here. I personally have only consumed doTERRA’s oils and can not vouch for any other brands. Always be aware of how to dilute the oils to make them safe for ingesting or applying topically. Read more about this here.

Aromatically in the Diffuser: On Guard‘s cinnamon meets woodsy scent makes for a great fall blend. An added bonus is the fact that you’re actually cleansing the air while making it smell great! It’s a nice option when you have guests coming over as it’s much more hospitable than asking everyone to hand sanitize as they walk through the door. I’ve owned several cheap diffusers and finally invested in the Petal one by doTERRA. I love it and plan to purchase one for each section of the house. **Update: I now own two of the Petals, the Dawn Humidifier, and the Roam. They are all amazing and 100% worth the investment.

Diluted and rubbed on soles of feet for immune boost. I don’t do this all year round (this may change once Lyla starts school), but during the fall and winter, this becomes part of our daily routine. Since On Guard contains Cinnamon (a hotter oil), I use the 3 to 1 ratio. Three parts Fractionated Coconut Oil and one part On Guard go into a roller ball. I rub it on our feet in the morning and before bedtime. I am able to apply the oil directly on my and Tim’s feet and we don’t have any sensitivity issue, but the coconut oil actually helps skin absorb easier and I always dilute everything I use on Lyla. There is also a handy pre-made roller blend available that takes the guess work out of diluting it yourself.

As a hand santizer. I have always used your basic alcohol laden hand sanitizers, but have never loved the dryness or the smell that comes along with them. Since having Lyla, I wanted a healthier option, so I decided to try out the On Guard spray. I love it!! It smells great, fits perfectly in my purse, dries very quickly, and Lyla giggles every time I spray her hands with it. While I don’t encourage her to do this, she often licks her hands after getting sprayed 🙂

To help with a scratchy throat. Let me warn you that I will drip this directly onto my tongue and it’s not for the faint of heart, as it is quite potent. However, I have had great success with it easing an irritated throat. You can also create a throat spray or gargle it in some water for a slightly less intense option. I haven’t tried the throat drops yet, but have heard good things!

My angle:

It’s no secret that doTERRA essential oils are a staple in our household. You can read here about my journey in getting started with oils and why we chose this particular brand. My goal with sharing the oils is not to build a business, but to help others who are interested in using or learning more about incorporating them into their lives. There are tons of sellers and blogs out there peddling tons of different products, including essential oils. I know because I’ve navigated many of them looking for good opinions and information. I’ve found that you tend to see very similar copy over and over with the same salesy pitch. Me writing yet another version of that wouldn’t provide any additional benefit. I want to share my personal experience with these little lovelies as a mother, wife, and woman looking for simple ways to improve my and my family’s quality of life. I will offer some basic stats as a way of introducing you to the oil, but all opinions will be honest and my own.
